The Exlibris
Collection of the National Library
comprises
about 9.000 plates from1500 -1850. The basis of the
collection is formed by bookplates from the books of
the Hofbibliothek (royal library) and the Collection
Rudolf Benkard with more than 6.000 items from the
16th to 18th centuries,
acquired in 1930. New acquisitions and donations in
the nineteenseventies changed the focus to the first
half of the 20th century. Since 1996 the
collection – meanwhile augmented to about 50.000
small graphics – has been documenting the
contemporary ex-libris oeuvre, too.
Artur Wolf and his Ex-libris
Collection in the library and graphic collection of
the Museum for Applied Art.
In 1933
the
ex-libris collection of the publisher Artur Wolf (29
cassettes, a file and a catalogue) was given to the
MAK. Today it is a collection of worldwide
importance, containing plates by Franz von Bayros,
Peter Behrens, C.O. Czeschka, Josef von Diveky, Hans
Frank, Josef Hoffmann, Gustav Klimt, Alfred Kubin,
Julius Klinger, Berthold Löffler, Max Liebenwein,
Kolo Moser, Emil Orlik, Franz von Stuck, Richard
Teschner and many others.
Artur Wolf, born 12th April, 1987 in
Mährisch-Weißkirchen, Czech Republic, after his
apprenticeship as bookseller in 1911 founded the
Artur Wolf publishing house, Seilerstätte 1, Vienna.
There he mainly sold graphic prints, etchings and
reproductions from his own publishing company, and
till the shutdown in 1937 published above all books
along the motto “the beautiful book” as announced in
the almanach
The beautiful book,
published by the firm in 1924. On 16th
Oct., 1932 he suddenly died in Vienna; according to
a letter of Fritz von Herzmanovsky-Orlandos he fell
off a horse. In his will Artur Wolf bequeathed all
his bookplates to the MAK that should preserve it as
a closed collection.
